Teacher Librarian  and Library Assistant Program and Presenters

Mal Lee is an educational consultant and author specializing in the development
of digital schools with an extensive understanding of the structural, organisational and
technological challenges facing schools and education leaders as they seek to take advantage of
the immense and ever merging educational and administrative opportunities made available by
digital technology, in a networked world.
His recent article published in Connections entitled, A library without books?, warns that those   of us who resist the need to question our traditional roles will be the cause of our own downfall. His research has found that schools who break down the traditional walled classroom mode no longer need a book-dominated school library as each classroom becomes a ”digital teaching hub”.
Mal’s session will explore the implications for school libraries and identify ways in which we can strengthen our new role of “information specialist”.

Paul Macdonald is the current owner of the well-known Children’s Bookshop, in Beecroft. He has a Master of Education, working almost 20 years as a teacher of Upper Primary and Secondary. He has won numerous awards in teaching such as a Quality Teacher Award in 2002, The Premier’s English Scholarship in 2004 and awards for his co-ordination of Regional Shakespearean Festivals. His interests include the development of literacy with a particular interest in reading for gifted children and boys literacy and books for adolescents.

Paul will review the Book of the Year shortlist.

ISLA Dates for 2010

To download the ISLA 2010 Application for membership form click on our Membership page

To view the ISLA calendar click here or click on the Calendar link in the righthand column of this page. Clicking on an event location in the calendar will open a google map.

One of the benefits of joining ISLA is that there will be other, smaller meetings and get-togethers for ISLA members during the year. At our first meeting of the year, we drew up a calendar for the year. We made a decision to include informal networking opportunities by scheduling a meeting once a term. There will be no formal agenda for these meetings. We feel that there is still a great need for teacher librarians and library assistants to share experiences over a cuppa. Following is a list of activities planned for the year. Please note the following dates in your diary:

Term 1:

Tuesday, 30th March: 6.30pm. Dinner at Samaras in Wollongong (Corrimal Street).

Term 2:

Wednesday, 5th May: Professional Development Day at Dapto High School.

Wednesday, 9th June: Networking afternoon tea, 4pm at Waniora PS. We will have an Interactive Whiteboard sharing session for Primary and Secondary TLs.

Wednesday, 18th June: CBC Conference (Sydney).

Thursday, 25th June: James Henri at Nowra HS – a follow-up to the day held last year, focussing on more practical applications of the ideas presented in November last year.

Term 3:

Wednesday, 28th July: Networking afternoon tea 4pm at Wollongong Public School library. This will be a great chance to discuss and share any Book Week ideas and will be followed by a dinner afterwards.

Term 4:

Thursday 28th October: Professional Development Day – venue not yet finalised.

Wednesday, 1st December. ISLA end of year dinner – venue not yet finalised.
