October 2008 Professional Development Day

Our next professional development day will be held on Thursday 30th October 2008 at Shellharbour Public School, Mary St, Shellharbour. There will be stands for both primary and secondary teacher librarians and library assistants.

The Presenters

Ian McLean is currently the teacher librarian at Penrith PS. Not only was he a former editor of SCAN, but he has also written articles for the journal. He has been a regular book rapper, participating in and developing several raps. He spoke at the ASLA conference earlier this year about his experiences setting up blogs and wikis for the children at his school. Visit these sites for more information:

Paul Macdonald is the current owner of the well known Children’s Bookshop, in Beecroft. He has a Master of Education, working almost 20 years as a teacher of Upper Primary and Secondary. He has won numerous awards in teaching such as a Quality Teacher Award in 2002, The Premier’s English Scholarship in 2004 and awards for his co-ordination of Regional Shakespearean Festivals. His interests include the development of literacy with a particular interest in reading for gifted children and boys’ literacy and books for adolescents.

Julie Vivas
One of Australia’s foremost illustrators, Julie Vivas’s work for the world renowned Possum Magic (written by Mem Fox) began a career as a children’s illustrator that has since seen the creation of some very important picture books. Her very distinctive watercolour style is seen in such well-known books as Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partidge, The Nativity, Let the Celebrations Begin, Let’s Eat and Hello Baby.
