IN SCHOOLS THAT FACE THE FUTURE:- LIBRARIES MATTER

This keynote address will provide an overview of the societal and economic pressures that are driving change in post industrial economies and their schools, review the characteristics of selected societies such as Australia, USA and Hong Kong, summarize current trends in Information and Communication technologies and their impacts on learning and schooling, review the impacts of generational differences on schooling, and provide focused advice on the features of a school and its library that fully incorporate digital technologies.

There will be a final section developing an example of a ‘preferred future’ for the Librarian as the Chief Information Officer of the school, and the library as the iCentre – the term proposed for the Library as the school’s Information Network Hub, so that its school remains central to the needs of a modern Australian society and its learning community. The concepts of Developing and Protecting the School’s Cyber Image and creating a Cyber Passport, will also be developed.

Cath Keane

Cath is the editor of Scan, a quarterly refereed journal published by the NSW Department of Education and Communities. Cath has worked in education for thirty years as a teacher and a teacher librarian, and remembers the excitement surrounding the introduction of OASIS Library. She believes in the importance of developing literate students who can search for and locate information, and transform their findings into shared knowledge.

Paul Macdonald

Paul is the owner of the well-known Children’s Bookshop, in Beecroft. “Paul has a Master of Education, working almost 20 years as a teacher of Upper Primary and Secondary. He has won numerous awards in teaching such as a Quality Teacher Award in 2002, The Premier’s English Scholarship in 2004 and awards for his co-ordination of Regional Shakespearean Festivals. His interests include the development of literacy with a particular interest in reading for gifted children, Boys’ Literacy and books for adolescents. When Paul is not talking books, he can be rather boring.” http://www.thechildrensbookshop.indies.com.au/AboutUs.aspx
Paul has spoken at many of our previous conferences and is consistently no. 1 in the ratings! We are trying
not to contemplate the time when he cannot attend our conferences. He is an inspiring presenter and his selections are always current and on target. His selections of books for sale are always fabulous. Paul will talk about what is current in books for children and young adults and with recommendations for holiday reading.

John Larkin

John Larkin was born in Yorkshire, England, and grew up in western Sydney. He has been a professional soccer player, trolley boy, factory hand, forklift driver, computer programmer, educator, librarian and comedian. John has written several books for children and three books for adults.
When John isn’t writing, he can generally be found teaching, lecturing, performing stand-up comedy, playing soccer, and embarking on long and largely futile hunts for tadpoles with his children at the local creek. John is also one of the most sought-after motivational speakers for children and young adults in the country with his stand-up comedy show about the creative process called ‘I’ve Been Eating Paste’. John lives in Sydney with his wife and three children.

knowledge and expertise of colleagues @ ASLA XXII Biennial Conference in
Sydney, 2-5 October – http://www.asla.org.au/pd/conference/registration.htm

Looking for research on teacher librarians as evidence-based practitioners
or research that supports reading?
Wanting to explore using innovative technologies in your library to improve
learning outcomes and engage students?
Do you find the prospect of resourcing the national curriculum a bit
daunting?
Do you need to know more about using persuasive texts in the classroom?
Maybe you are interested in engaging students in collaborative writing and
even tossing in a bit of technology to spice things up.

These are just some of the questions that will be answered for you in the
workshops and sessions that follow the conference themes You will get to
spend time during the conference working through the topic and drawing on
the knowledge and expertise of the presenter or presenters.

Pru Mitchell’s workshop on Resourcing a 21st century curriculum will
consider the implementation of the Australian Curriculum in the context of
school libraries. It will consider what priorities face teacher librarians
and school leadership teams in ensuring the school library successfully
supports learners and teachers in selecting, organising and facilitating
access to curriculum resources at the school level.

A team of teacher librarians from Queensland – Kristine Cooke, Cathy Oxley,
Helen Stower and Anne Weaver – will workshop Collaborative Writing. They
initiated a collaborative project to foster creative writing in Year 8
students involving two boys’ and two girls’ schools.

Be inspired by….
Camilla Elliott from Mazenod College, Vic who will explore Library team 2.0:
innovations, enablers, inhibitors
Isobel Williams from Ogilvie High School, Tasmania who will discuss the
results of a trial of eBooks and eBook readers to help address Are eBooks
for you?
Mr Jeremy LeBard at ReadCloud will present the world’s first social eReading
software designed for schools where educators and students can share
multimodal annotations within eBooks. This innovation turns the eBook into a
place for discussion, collaboration, social learning and exploration through
embedded learning tools, resulting in an entirely new way of learning.
Mr Ian McLean from Penrith Public School, NSW will share how you can
transform an old portable library into a fresher, more efficient, inviting
and innovating workspace and eventually a new BER library.
Ann Gillespie from Queensland will address the topic, Profiling teacher
librarians as evidence based practitioners and share the research that
investigates the nature of evidence-based practice as it applies to teacher
librarians in Australia.
Ms Marita Thomson from The King’s School will consider the large body of
research and best practice literature on readers’ advisory or reader
development. The session will describe protocols which help adults talk to
teens about books and develop skills in helping them to find what they want
to read.
Mrs Cathy Oxley from Brisbane Grammar School will explore the use of mobile
technologies in libraries …. Mobile technology is increasingly becoming
the preferred method of internet access by teenage users, and what better
way for libraries to be perceived as useful and relevant than to provide
instant, online, 24/7 access to reliable information using this technology?

And there is more, so check out the program @
